How Long Does a Windshield Replacement Take?
Two questions matter most before you book: how long will the appointment take, and when can I drive again? Here are the straight answers for most Dallas drivers, with the caveats that matter.
Quick version: About 60 minutes for the install itself, plus another hour of safe drive-away time. Block out two hours total. If your vehicle needs ADAS recalibration, add 30-60 minutes on top of that.
What the 60-minute install actually covers
The hour of install time breaks down roughly as:
- Removing the old windshield (~15 min) — cutting through the existing urethane bond and lifting the glass out cleanly without damaging the frame.
- Frame prep (~10 min) — cleaning the pinch weld (the metal channel the glass bonds to), priming, and applying fresh urethane.
- Setting the new glass (~15 min) — positioning the windshield, pressing it into the urethane bead, securing with suction cups or retention tape while it sets.
- Post-install check (~10 min) — verifying the seal, cleaning the glass, removing protective film, walk-around inspection.
Most standard passenger vehicles fit cleanly inside the 60-minute window. A few things can push it longer:
- Damaged pinch weld. If the frame has rust, prior damage, or debris left from a previous shop, the operator has to prep it properly. Skipping that step causes leaks. Add 15-20 minutes.
- Complex vehicle. Some trucks, large SUVs, and luxury vehicles have moldings, sensors, or trim that take longer to remove and reinstall. Add 15-30 minutes.
- ADAS recalibration. Covered below — this is the big one.
ADAS recalibration adds 30 to 60 minutes
If your vehicle is roughly 2018 or newer, there's a good chance it has a forward-facing camera mounted to the windshield that runs lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. When the windshield comes out, that camera has to be recalibrated to aim correctly through the new glass.
Two types of calibration:
- Static. Performed indoors with targets set at precise distances. Takes 30-45 minutes.
- Dynamic. Performed by driving the vehicle at specified speeds while the system relearns. Takes 30-60 minutes including drive time.
Some vehicles need both. A few high-end vehicles require dealer-only equipment. The operator will tell you up front which type your vehicle needs and how long it adds. Skipping calibration is the single biggest shortcut a cheap shop will take — more in our ADAS calibration guide.
When can you actually drive? The 1-hour rule
The minimum safe drive-away time is typically about one hour after installation. That's the point at which the urethane adhesive has cured enough to hold the windshield at the strength required for airbag deployment and crash performance.
Modern fast-cure urethanes can hit safe drive-away in as little as 30 minutes in good conditions. Older or budget products may need several hours. The operator will give you the specific number based on the product they used and the conditions at install. Don't guess — wait until they clear you.
During the first 24 hours, do:
- Drive normally once the operator clears you
- Leave a window cracked slightly to equalize pressure when closing doors
- Park outside or in a covered spot, but skip automatic car washes
During the first 24 hours, don't:
- Slam doors hard in the first hour
- Run the vehicle through an automatic or pressure car wash
- Stick anything to the new glass (toll tag, dashcam mount, etc.)
- Pressure-wash near the windshield seam
- Remove the retention tape early if the operator applied any
After 48 hours, treat the windshield like the rest of the vehicle.
Texas weather actually helps
Urethane cures faster in warm conditions and slower in cold. In DFW, this works in your favor most of the year. Summer install temperatures often shorten safe drive-away times rather than extending them. The only weather that meaningfully delays curing is a cold snap below about 40°F, which is rare here.
Mild rain or overcast skies don't usually prevent a mobile installation — operators work under a canopy or in a covered area. Heavy storms or active rain on the windshield itself can force a reschedule. The operator will check the forecast before heading out and reach out if anything needs to change.
Chip and crack repair is much faster
If your damage qualifies for repair rather than full replacement, the timeline is dramatically shorter:
- Total appointment time: about 30 minutes
- Drive-away time: immediate
Repair uses resin injection rather than adhesive bonding, so there's no cure window before driving. The operator will tell you at the time of the quote whether your damage qualifies — see our windshield repair vs replacement guide. If it does, it's almost always the faster and cheaper path.
Same-day service across DFW
Same-day appointments are often available for both repair and replacement, especially for standard passenger vehicles. The earlier in the day you call, the better the chance of getting a slot the same morning. Mobile operators across the metro come to you — no driving to a shop, no waiting around.
Quick reference
| Situation | Total time to plan |
|---|---|
| Chip or crack repair only | ~30 min, drive immediately |
| Standard replacement, no ADAS | ~2 hours (60 min install + 1 hr safe drive) |
| Replacement with ADAS recalibration | ~2.5-3 hours total |
| Same-day appointment | Call in the morning to check availability |
The simplest approach: block out two hours. Most customers are back on the road within that window.
